G1 FLIGHT STAKES (Randwick R6): POWERS OF OPAL caught the eye first-up in midweek company hitting the line in the best last 200m of the meeting with the tempo against. She then stepped to Midway grade against the older horses and again warmed up late to clock the fourth-best last 200m of the meeting. She’s crying out for the mile and if the favourite stubs her toe, she might be the one to blouse them late.
G1 THE METROPOLITAN (Randwick R8): TRUST IN YOU was a complete forgive in his Australian debut. He was taken back from the draw, covered extra ground and was never really in the race. His work through the line was super and he can settle much closer to the lead speed here. Not the worst 150/1 shot we’ve ever seen.
G1 THE EPSOM (Randwick R9): MY OBERON had no luck first-up in a fast race and then was doing his best work through line last time with the tempo against under-weight-for-age conditions. He drops in weight here, has a class edge over his rivals and will look to Nash to overcome the wide draw.
G1 TURNBULL STAKES (Flemington R8): SHARP ‘N’ SMART gave some type of inkling that he could be on his way back to his best. His last win was in the G1 New Zealand Derby in his three-year-old season but the way he surged to the front last start on a very heavy track with a big weight was an indication that he could be about to find his best. Extra trip suits and it wouldn’t shock to see him get over the top of them.
G1 THE METROPOLITAN (Randwick R8): ALEGRON is the horse I think can only run well second-up. He was fair in the Kingston Town, which is the key lead-up to this, and carries residual fitness through his Brisbane Winter campaign, which saw him run a terrific second in the Premiers’ Cup, before a dominant staying display in the Brisbane Cup. He can get a soft run from barrier five and should be one of the strongest late.
G1 THE EPSOM (Randwick R9): CHRYSAOR profiles similarly to last year’s winner Rediener, coming through the G3 Gunsynd Classic at Eagle Farm in June. This bloke finished midfield there, but was one of the runs of the race, coming from near last from the outside draw. He resumed at Flemington three weeks ago and won a Listed race over 1400m, again coming from near last to win by half a length, with a big gap back to the third horse. He can settle closer from barrier five and gets the services of Group 1 jockey Craig Williams.
G1 TURNBULL STAKES (Flemington R8): YOUNG WERTHER can take up a forward position from barrier two in a race which looks void of speed. He has a terrific record at Flemington, running in this race twice for a second and a third, as well as a third in the Champions Stakes at this track and trip last November. He won first-up with 61kg over 2000m at Caulfield beating Duke De Sessa who has since run well in the Underwood Stakes. He should benefit from the 6kg weight relief, and maps to get all of the favours.
