Who are the best kicks in the AFL?

Former AFL players Josh Jenkins and Adam Cooney have assessed the competition and come up with five players each.

The only criteria was that Jenkins and Cooney could not pick the same player.

1 - Dayne Zorko (Brisbane)

“I’ve got this guy as the best kick in the competition,” Jenkins said on SEN’s The Run Home.

“I think he’s incredibly important in everything this club does. The magnet move of the decade I’ve called this guy.

“He can bring the ball back into play via a kick-in quicker than you can blink. He gets it and it is gone.

“I think he is the best kick in the comp.”

2 - Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (St Kilda)

“His ability to run at full speed and still be able to kick with touch is better than anyone else in the competition.

“Bailey Dale would be second. It is something not many players can do - running flat out, most people kick it flat out and kick it as far as they can.

“Nasiah has the ability to take weight off the kick and kick with touch, and hit short targets even when running flat out which is quite incredible.”

3 - Errol Gulden (Sydney)

“He’s a gut-runner which makes his kicking even more attractive, successful and impressive.

“Because he is running so much and he’s kicking under fatigue a lot.

“He’s very good at taking a little bit of weight off the kick.”

4 - Izak Rankine (Adelaide)

“I’m forecasting a little bit but this guy can most definitely use the ball quite nicely in the forward half of the ground.

“He’s got touch, he’s got creativity. He probably doesn’t display it through the middle yet, but equally I can’t remember him wasting a ball either.”

5 - Gryan Miers (Geelong)

“This is the player I would want to lead to the most coming out of full-forward - Geelong’s Gryan Miers.

“Forget the technique, worry about the outcome.

“He’s very unlikely to kick it out the back, but do not let him give the little short hit-up around the corner because he is a fine kick.”

Cooney’s five

1 - Zach Merrett (Essendon)

“Very neat, doesn’t waste it. Always kicks it to the best option.

“He can run and kick flat out as well.”

2 - Jeremy Cameron (Geelong)

“He kills you anywhere he goes. He kills you in front of goal and he can kill you with his field kicking.

“A high-retention player who never wastes it. Makes great decisions with ball in hand and he’s lethal in front of goal.”

3 - Bailey Dale (Western Bulldogs)

“He’s a 360 degree guy but generally he’s the one who can hit that 45-50m kick, bullet-like, to the next destination.”

4 - Karl Amon (Hawthorn)

“I had Zorko in but (because off JJ’s pick) I have taken him out and will throw Karl Amon in at four as a late entrant.”

5 - Jaspa Fletcher (Brisbane)

“I have a really young player who has caught my eye.

“In consultation with one of the game’s greats in Rohan Smith we came up with Jaspa Fletcher.

“His poise, control and decision-making for a young player is phenomenal.”
