NZ star Well Written has made his way to Australia for the Spring Racing Carnival, but she will be without her regular hoop, Matt Cartwright.
Cartwright, who has ridden the mare across all of her seven wins, has been replaced by Sydney jet Zac Lloyd.
Reflecting on how Cartwright took the news of the sacking, trainer Stephen Marsh admitted the jockey took it like a champion and even rode the chestnut in her final piece of work before crossing the Tasman Sea.
“Look, he's been brilliant,” Marsh told SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.
“He's taken it on the chin. He’s obviously disappointed but totally understood.
“Look, he's just carried on – he came in and rode her in her final piece of work. He's been rock solid.
“Certainly a testament to the bloke he is.”
Giddy Up host Gareth Hall chimed in and referenced what other jockeys have told him – there is two directions which hoops can take after a sacking – and Cartwright is absolutely taking the right direction.
“As a few of the jocks have told me, you can go two ways: it can make them stronger and more determined, and they can kick their career off, or they can sulk,” Hall stated.
“But it looks like he's done the right thing, so we wish him the best of luck.”
The NZ mare is currently the $3.80 favourite to take out the Group 1 Epsom Handicap on Saturday.
