Mitchell Moses has been officially ruled out for the remainder of the Rugby League World Cup, with the extent of his leg injury revealed.
The Eels halfback came off the field in the opening minutes of the second half during Australia’s 24-22 win against New Zealand with what appeared to be a calf injury, having been unable to take kicking duties
Moses then underwent scans which revealed a high muscle tear in his leg seeing unable to play for the rest of the tournament.
“Mitch made a wonderful contribution to our World Cup preparations during the camp in Sydney and very bravely tried to play through the injury until he eventually had to come from the field on Thursday night,” Australian coach Kevin Walters said in a statement.
“He is naturally disappointed at the outcome today and the fact that he tried to stay out there when he was clearly injured shows just what it means to him to represent his country and play in the Kangaroos jersey. We wish Mitch all the best with his recovery.”
Following Moses’ injury, Raiders and NSW five-eighth Ethan Strange has been called up from the reserves and into the 23-man squad.
Australia’s next game comes on October 25 when the Kangaroos face Fiji at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
SEN League will have live commentary of the match across our radio network and on the SEN app as part of our Rugby League World Cup coverage from 7pm AEDT.
