A monster multi-year Premier League exodus is one of a number of sanctions set to be handed down to Manchester City, according to a new report in the UK.

In September, City were found guilty of enormous rule breaks between 2009 and 2018, including artificially inflating their total revenue by more than $1 billion.

During the decade long period under investigation, City won eight trophies including three Premier League titles.

Amid global outrage and calls for significant punishments, a new report from the Daily Mail claims the club will be handed down such a devastating points deduction that their relegation will be unavoidable.

The report then adds that a secondary points deduction in 2027-28 season will cement their presence in the Championship.

There would also be a significant fine.

While City have appealed the guilty verdict, the Premier League is reportedly eager to hand down sanctions before the result of the hearing which could take until the end of January.

“There is very little point in pursuing a Treaty of Versailles-type punishment,” chief football journalist Oliver Holt wrote.

“The desire to humiliate the defeated might satisfy a base instinct but it does very little for the future wellbeing of the body politic.

“City must be punished, of course, but they must also be given a pathway towards rehabilitation.”

As the world waits for confirmation of the sanctions, questions are being asked what might become of the club.

Can their owners remain in power? How does a Championship club honour the contracts and salaries of global superstars like Erling Haaland?

What will happen to the significant staffing group?

“Manchester City mean business in their appeal,” Mark Bosnich told SEN Breakfast.

“It will be interesting to see what pans out. (Oliver) Holt is normally pretty spot on.

“There is also the option of the high court, which City have if this doesn’t go their way. “Or both sides position themselves for a settlement.

“What I do know is we have to be careful. The next steps with this case will impact a lot for the league for the next 20 years.

“East Manchester where City are based, has been completely rebuilt by the club owners, they have heavy investment in the UK. All these factors come into this.

“The staff and players wouldn’t have had any clue about this. City, regardless of what they have been found guilty of, have maintained their innocence.

“I know the Premier league wants this cleared up, it’s hanging over like a cloud, other clubs want immediate sanctions, but if City win the appeal it all goes out the window.”

As it stands, City sits atop the Premier League table under Enzo Maresca in season 2026/27 with seven victories from as many matches.
