Dolphins playmaker Sean O’Sullivan has explained the chaos that ensued on the field prior to the 25-year-old slotting a monster field goal in golden point to send the Dolphins back into the top eight.
After 80 minutes, the Dolphins and Warriors couldn’t be separated at 32-32. Following the Warriors’ near miss at a field goal in golden point, O’Sullivan stepped up to deliver his first career field goal from 40 metres to secure a famous win.
O’Sullivan revealed a miscommunication with his teammates led to the ball being in his hands and he had no other option but to have a shot to win the game. “Jamayne Isaako has one of the biggest boots,” O’Sullivan told SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“He’s a beautiful kick but we shifted the ball on play four so it wasn’t the right angle for him.
“I had to put my hand up at that moment because I’m a left-footer.”
“Everyone expected Isaako to take the kick,” SEN’s Andrew Voss said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“So was I,” O’Sullivan replied.
“I thought we were going to take another hit up to get closer to the middle of the field but the halves called for the ball out the back.
“I asked why they were shifting and then I just said that I would kick it.
“Jake Averillo knew I was going to kick it and I told him to pass it to me because he was asking who to pass the ball to.
“He’s pretty smart, knew I was a left-footer so it was good of him.
“We had lost a couple games and they had been by six points or less. It was good for the team to get a close win and know that we can do it.
“It’s a great win to get our season back on track.”
O’Sullivan has fallen down the pecking order of playmakers at the Dolphins due to the emergence of Isaiya Katoa and resurgence of Kodi Nikorima. Sunday’s two-point win over the Warriors was just his sixth appearance for the season.
The 25-year-old still has a year to run on his contract at the expansion club and said he is happy to fill any role for the team.
“I will never put myself ahead of the team,” O’Sullivan added.
“I think I am an NRL halfback and I would love to be playing there but due to the cards that I have been dealt at the moment, I’m not and that’s absolutely ok.
“I’m happy for Kodi and Isaiya because they are both doing a wonderful job.
“I’m just going to keep my head down, continue to train hard and whatever happens will happen.
“Hopefully I can take my opportunity when it is next given.”
The Dolphins travel to Bundaberg to take on the in-form Bulldogs on Saturday.
